About the Program

The Young Mariner Program is a hands-on, STEM-focused summer camp on Cape Cod that immerses kids in marine science, local marine life, coastal ecosystems, and ocean conservation. This on-the-water adventure introduces campers to boating, sailing, and maritime skills through exciting activities and interactive experiments, making it one of the best summer camps for kids who love the ocean.

Curriculum

Marine Science Exploration

Campers will immerse themselves in Cape Cod's marine ecosystems through hands-on exploration and themed weekly activities. They’ll take beach walks with creature identification cards, examine marine life under microscopes, explore tidal pools, and pull up lobster pots. These interactive experiences will deepen their understanding of the creatures and habitats that thrive in local waters. Each themed week will emphasize a unique aspect of marine science, encouraging campers to investigate topics like biodiversity, habitat health, and the effects of environmental changes on marine ecosystems.

Boat Building and Design

Campers will discover the science and art of boat building through hands-on design challenges and experiments. They’ll tour the museum’s wooden boat shop, antique boat barn, and model ship collection to see how boat design has evolved. Using concepts of buoyancy and stability, they’ll design and test their own model boats, gaining insight into what makes a vessel seaworthy and efficient.

Boating Skills and Safety

Developing confidence on the water is central to the Young Mariner Program. Campers will learn essential boating skills such as steering, docking, and basic operations on the museum’s vessels, Sarah and Adventure. Safety is paramount—campers will be trained in using life jackets, on-water emergency procedures, and basic seamanship skills to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Marine Conservation

Understanding and protecting the ocean is key to the future of our planet. Campers will investigate pollution and its effects on marine life through experiments, learn about sustainable fishing practices, and participate in activities like mock wildlife rescues. Conservation discussions will also explore local efforts to preserve Cape Cod’s marine environment, including oyster farming and habitat restoration.

Testimonials

“Both boys came home excited every day, they loved being in the boat and catching fish and crabs. The sighting of Neal the seal was a highlight. Based on the description of each day there was a good amount of learning and the very important time to play. A well structured “learning based” camp incorporates time play, often children do not realize how much they have actually learned. The young Mariner program is wonderful, both boys are looking forward to next year. Thank you for all you do!!!”
