Swirling Currents - a talk with former shellfish biologist Sandy Macfarlane
(Hyannis, MA — February 15, 2020) Sunday, March 1, 2020 ~ Join us in our Community Room from 2:00-4:00 pm with former Orleans Shellfish Biologist Sandy Macfarlane for an important and informative presentation about the topics in her book, Swirling Currents: Controversy, Compromise and Dynamic Coastal Change.
From whales to fishing to climate change, Macfarlane is passionate about reading between the headlines and connecting the dots to demonstrate how these issues are all related. “Oftentimes we read the headlines about one or more of these issues, but we don’t necessarily think in terms of the big picture and how they’re all related,” said Macfarlane, who served for 15 years as Shellfish Biologist then Conservation Administrator in Orleans. She will share her wealth of expertise with a presentation followed by Q & A.
About Sandy Macfarlane Macfarlane’s curiosity about all things marine began in her youth. For fun, Macfarlane would spend hours rowing her 14′ Cape Dory on Pleasant Bay – a hobby that lasted decades. Her love of the natural world manifested as forty years of hands-on experience in resource evaluation and policy and management, during which she has gained much insight into the social, political and economic landscapes of coastal communities. Swirling Currents is her third book.
About the Cape Cod Maritime Museum In 2018, The Cape Cod Maritime Museum and Cook Boat Shop celebrated its 20th anniversary of preserving and celebrating the maritime history and tradition of wood boat building on Cape Cod. The museum offers permanent and rotating exhibits, interactive maritime-themed activities and a fine arts gallery. The Cook Boat Shop is a working exhibit space for traditional and contemporary wood boat building and includes restoration projects on historic Cape Cod water craft. The Historic Boat Barn holds the only collection of all wooden boats native to Cape Cod. The museum is also home to “Sarah,” a Crosby catboat replica, and a gift shop featuring unique and beautiful maritime themed gifts, books and apparel.
